For the past few weeks I’ve been scheming up a project that I am SO excited about. A while back I read a story about a town in Iraq that was under ISIS rule for two years. During those two years, not a single photo was taking in the entire town because the people were not allowed to have phones or cameras. As a photographer, this made my heart ache. Don’t get me wrong, my entire body aches over the atrocities being committed in an area of the world full of precious people. But this got me thinking about photos in general and the fact that when refugee families flee their homes, most of the time they leave behind everything. That means photos too.
Yesterday I got a bunch of my friends together and we took pictures of our little people together. This is my community (although no where near all of it) and we wanted to document the ways our lives blend together. These women and I are part of a top secret Facebook group together, where we tell our stories and show up for each other. We scream and laugh and say “you’ve got this” almost every day. I hope that you have a community that does the same for you. Think about documenting what you mean to each other sometime in photos or video.
Hello and Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here. The past couple of weeks I have been following an idea, chasing it really, and the idea was that our little corner of south central Kansas is full of truly amazing people. I featured nineteen of those people in thirteen posts on social media while many of you followed along. It was a journey not just in meeting new people and telling their stories but also in learning things about myself. I am so grateful for the experience and for everyone who participated.
I’ll never not love in home family sessions. Everybody gets to just be themselves and that’s what I live for.
